Richard Joseph dies
Posted on March 5, 2007 at 04:44 by Jon

I'm incredibly sad to have to report the death of Richard Joseph, ex-audio director at Elixir and composer of many tracks on Evil Genius. He was a genuinely decent guy, very talented and a pleasure to know. I'm sure everyone who knew him will join with me in saying he will be much missed.

Wow - it's been a while since I wrote a news title like that. But yup, it's true. Ever wondered what he's been up to for the past year? Well, the lovely guys at CVG.com have managed to snag him for an in-depth interview. Part 1 is here and Part 2 is right over here. Enjoy!

Sorry all...

Elixer IP transfer confirmed!
Posted on March 3, 2006 at 02:14 by Ergophobia

At last, after half a year of just rumours, we can finally confirm that Rebellion has bought the Elixir IP, including Evil Genius! This could very well mean that a sequel to Evil Genius is not as unlikely as many of us might have thought!

A big thanks to Alex Thomson for sharing the good news with us, as can be read here.

We have a wiki!
Posted on February 25, 2006 at 13:25 by Jon

It might all fall apart, but no harm in giving it a go! It's right here and like all wikis it needs your help to get it going! It's hopefully going to be the best place for EG information - and who knows, if EG2 is announced, it might get really big!

So if you're up for helping, especially if you are decent at wiki coding, then join right in!

Forums moved!
Posted on August 5, 2005 at 15:19 by Jon

The forums have changed hosts to a much more powerful server, with many thanks to our hosting providor, forum member Quiky. However, it will take several weeks until the "n1nj4" name can forward to the new hosting, so for now you can find our forums at http://www.n1nj4.com/ instead. Happy chatting!

Update: The major links on the site have been updated but there's simply too much of them. If you find a link not working, please switch "n1nj4" for "n1nj4" in the URL. Thanks in advance for bearing with us.

New Poll - Please Vote!
Posted on July 23, 2005 at 07:51 by Ergophobia

We finally have a new poll, so please cast your votes!

For everyone's information, Republic Dawn: Chronicles of the Seven is a sequel to Republic: The Revolution, made by Elixir and released in 2003. Republic: Dawn has been in the making for some time now, and since Elixir has closed down the game has luckily been picked up by the other developer, Nicely Crafted.

For a little more information, check out this article.

Apologies, everyone, the forum's backing up at the moment...

Luckily now we, too, have access to this package! Check this page for all the details you need!

New Site Administrators
Posted on May 1, 2005 at 04:00 by Ergophobia

Caused by the recent events, the selection of two new Site Admins has faded a bit into the background. That is why I am now proud to announce that Roain and I are officially taking over.

Don't expect major changes, though. We'll be updating the game section, probably, and we will take over Jon's tasks, such as monitor the latest mods and posting any news about the game. (which will not be that much, mods put aside).

Over the next few months, don't be surprised if Jon still regularly posts his share of site news. He will still be an Administrator, but the idea is that we gradually take over his tasks.

Again, thanks to all who have offered to help on the site, all suggestions are still appreciated!

Summing up
Posted on April 30, 2005 at 03:05 by Jon

It's been an awful last few days, to be perfectly honest. Elixir going south has left thoughts of Evil Genius 2 out the window. And I'm now looking for a new job...

Anyway, we have a great community here, with modding continuing to push back the possibilities. We will continue to provide you with EG news and the forums will not stop.

Thanks to those who have sent in e-mails to me and to Elixir offering their thoughts - it was as much a shock for me as it was for you, and shock seems to be the overriding theme, as well as sadness, about the closure of such an exciting studio.

Contacting Elixir
Posted on April 28, 2005 at 08:14 by Jon

I know that there may be people who would like to pass on their condolences to the staff at Elixir Studios - especially those who enjoyed Republic or Evil Genius. If you would like, feel free to use my contact form to send in your comments or messages and I'll forward them on to the relevant people.

And bang on queue...
Posted on April 28, 2005 at 07:18 by Jon

The forums go belly up. We may be experiencing extra traffic, perhaps - our apologies. We are working towards getting them up as soon as possible, following today's sad news.

Elixir to close
Posted on April 28, 2005 at 03:41 by Jon

Very sad day. As many of you know, Elixir created Evil Genius and had a bright future ahead, but sadly things weren't to be. All employees have been made redundant, myself included. We here at Evil Planet will continue, however, to enjoy the excellant game that is Evil Genius. GamesIndutry.biz article.
ELIXIR STUDIOS BEGINS WINDING DOWN OPERATIONS.

It is with great sadness that Elixir Studios today announced it is to cease day-to-day operations, effective immediately, and will seek the orderly sale and re-use of all its remaining assets and IP.

Following the successful release of Evil Genius in October 2004, the Company has been working on a very innovative game for a major US software and games publisher for the past couple of years. This project was recently cancelled due to the perceived high-risk profile of the endeavour. Elixir also has a number of promising original prototypes at various stages of development but the Board of Directors feel that the current risk averse publishing climate, in the run up to the launch of next generation platforms, virtually precludes the signing of any original IP (which is not already part of a well-established franchise or license), without an unreasonably large strategic investment in the project by the developer themselves.

In light of the above, and the current financial and market conditions, the Directors have taken the decision to use a part of the cash resources held by the Company to treat its employees in a professional manner by paying redundancy packages to everyone and to allow an orderly wind-down of operations.

Mark Hewitt, CEO: "It is clearly a disappointing day for the team here, and for British independent developers in general, but we were extremely keen to wind things down on our terms and treat our employees and creditors properly and in a professional manner. It has been a real privilege working with such incredibly talented people, and I have nothing but admiration for our backers and the team here. We have a fantastic collection of people working at Elixir and other developers would be crazy not to snap them up immediately!"

Demis Hassabis, founder and Chairman: "It has been an amazing roller-coaster ride. It's hard to believe that 7 years have flown by. I'm very proud of what all the staff at Elixir have achieved and the games we produced. We gave it everything we had but ultimately it wasn't quite enough. It seems that today's games industry no longer has room for small independent developers wanting to work on innovative and original ideas. Perhaps there is no longer any need for them. However, this was the sole purpose of setting up Elixir and something we could never compromise on by going down the licensing route."

Evil Planet Exclusive - Mod tools from Elixir
Posted on April 27, 2005 at 07:18 by Jon

For many months, fans of Evil Genius have been kicking and screaming for a modding tool to help play around with the models and stuff in Evil Genius. Well, this morning a tool has been released, made by lead programmer of Evil Genius, Alex, which allows the game to accept .x files - meaning that you can have a go with changing models and so forth using your favourite 3D modelling package. All the details, download links, readme files and a place to ask questions is this thread on the forums.

Please note this is a beta program and feedback about it is encouraged.

Mod page updates
Posted on April 26, 2005 at 05:43 by Jon

Thanks, once again, to The Sinister Mastermind for delving into the depths of the forums to pick out some of the mods and skins that are not listed on our modding page (now updated). Not all mods and skins are listed there, so do keep checking (and contributing) to the forums too!

Arctic mod - further updates and skin packs
Posted on April 25, 2005 at 02:23 by Jon

If you have not downloaded Evil Argon's excellant arctic mod yet then now would be an excellant time to try it out. Today three skin packs have been released, created by forum member "The Sinister Mastermind" and include icey blue skins for every genius, henchman and minion - a truly excellant effort and very effective. Currently they are all available as seperate downloads so you can pick and choose what you have in your game - I am working on a complete pack in the near future. All the details, images and download links are here.

Thanks!
Posted on April 25, 2005 at 02:22 by Jon

Thanks to everyone who contacted me offering to help work on this site. I have sifted through the applications and two people have been selected - more details soon!

Fancy your chances working on this site?
Posted on April 18, 2005 at 13:35 by Jon

As I mentioned in a post about a week ago, I feel it is becoming inapropriate for me to own and maintain this website (and our sister site, RepRev) as I now work in the computer games industry myself. I firmly believe that fansites should not only be for the fans, but also by the fans. Therefore I am looking for some people to take over one of the sites and move it forward. There are a few days left for interested applicants to make an entry, and all the details are in this forum thread.

Skin pack listings
Posted on April 18, 2005 at 05:43 by Jon

With the kind help of forum member The Sinister Mastermind, I have updated our mod page with a load of new skin packs and links plucked from the forums. It is not the full collection by any means, and you may want to browse the forums to find out all the other cool skins our members have made.

The complete Bonus CD
Posted on April 15, 2005 at 09:59 by Jon

The World Domination Starter Pack was a bonus add-on to Evil Genius which some lucky people in the UK got when they ordered their copies of the game. It contained bonus content, including a new henchman, and a poster/comic/screensaver/video combination, amongst other things. Now, I've made the complete CD available for download (with permission) and the 250meg zip is available on FilePlanet (free registration required). Enjoy!

Did you check out our wiki yet?
Yeah, I even added a thing or two.
Yeah, it's looking good so far!
Yeah, but I don't really see the point.
No, but I surely will!
No, and I don't suppose I will.
Huh? What IS a wiki?
