| Posted on December 29, 2004 at 03:04 by Jon |
It's a pity that the category of "Best Game No-one Ever Played" is where Evil Genius makes an entrance into IGN's 2004 gaming awards, but better than nothing I guess. Go vote for the best game by a mile, Evil Genius, right here!

My trusty hit counter has confirmed that this week we hit the impressive 1,000,000 visits (not hits) mark over the Christmas period, a full month before the site hits its first birthday. It's great to see 2,000 seperate people here every day and hundreds of forum posts daily - nice one guys, and here's to 2005 and all the Evil Genius 2 news it may bring!

| Exclusive: Interview with Demis |
 |
| Posted on December 21, 2004 at 08:43 by Jon |
As it's coming up to the end of the calender year, I thought I'd take the opportunity to email Demis Hassabis, Creative Director at Elixir Studios and put a few questions to him. The short interview covers Elixir's comments about Evil Genius, relations with Vivendi Universal (the publishers), ideas for Evil Genius 2 and a hopeful question about Blue Vault. It's an interesting read and has a few little tid-bits of info about EG2, so take a look!

| New poll |
 |
| Posted on December 20, 2004 at 02:10 by Jon |
The last poll was quite an important one, so I left it up for a while ("Did the patch help you?" results), but it's time for a new one. Although EG2 has not been officially announced as such, Elixir have mentioned in a recent press statement that ideas and presumably high-level designs for it are floating around. So does that give you a magical Christmas feeling, or are you pretty indifferent to the idea?

| Elixir press release |
 |
| Posted on December 13, 2004 at 07:12 by Jon |
Elixir Studios today made a press release regarding their financial situation over the last year and their plans for the future. The full statement is as follows:
Elixir Studios today announced the successful closure of a new round of investment with £1,000,000 having been raised from existing institutional and private investors. The funding is to provide the Company with additional resources as it enters the next stage of its development strategy.
Following the successful release of Evil Genius with Vivendi Universal Games in October, Elixir Studios is currently in full production of its next major title, under contract with a market-leading US publisher. Conceived and signed 18 months ago, the as yet unannounced original game is scheduled for release in 2006. Elixir's other teams are currently working on plans for an Evil Genius sequel as well as a prototype for a next generation console IP.
Following on from the new investment and the Company's strategic goals, Elixir is planning an internal re-deployment of resources pending execution of the next publishing contract, a move that is likely to see total head count reduced by around 15.
Elixir's CEO, Mark Hewitt, commented "we are very pleased to have closed our planned fund raising and to have the full backing of our shareholders. As a company, we are really focused on forging ahead and completing our next title, which is an extremely exciting and innovative game, with a great publisher, as well as seeing our other plans come to fruition."
It is good to hear some information about the future plans at Elixir plus assurances about the financial stability of the company for next "stage of development activity". Brief details about the company re-organisation resulting in a lower head count is unfortunate but sadly not unusual in the gaming industry. GamesIndustry.biz has a front page article.

| Review catch-up |
 |
| Posted on December 10, 2004 at 07:23 by Jon |
It's been a while since I scoured the web for new reviews, so unsuprisingly I found two to list here which I missed earlier. The first, from natjak is a fairly bog standard review, with a rather bog standard score of 6.8/10. The much more heartening offering from Game Critics, however, awards Evil Genius a hearty 90% ans finds little to mark down on, suggesting playing the game was "dealing with greatness". Nice one.

This one seems more than a little late out of the starting blocks, but G4 Tech TV has finally released their 2-page review of Evil Genius, giving it 3/5. They mention "confusing base construction interface", which is a little puzzling, but applauds the campy humour and the chance to be the bad guy!. Thanks for the info, VillainousVillain.

| Blackheart goodies |
 |
| Posted on December 2, 2004 at 08:06 by Jon |
An early Christmas present for you all. On the ever elusive pre-order CD, which was given out to some lucky guys ordering at GAME stores in the UK, were various cool Col. Blackheart goodies. Not only was there a patch to enable him in the game (which is now available from Evil Planet here), but a short video, huge poster and comic strip from one of the Elixir artists, Siku. So, I thought it was about time you guys could check it out for yourselves. The 15.6meg zip containing the lot is sitting right here on our special no-queues-for-anyone FilePlanet servers.

In case you missed the last contest, another forum contest is underway! The last contest featured tricky encryption puzzles that confounded our forum members for days. This one is a bit more user friendly (as in less technical) and is open to all forum members. Details can be found at this page.
Various clues are posted by either WebNutMark or EvilJon throughout the Evil Planet Forums. Some members have already made some progress, but it is far from too late to catch up and win the prize!
Good luck to all those that want to give it a shot!

| New poll |
 |
| Posted on November 16, 2004 at 09:18 by Jon |
About time for a new poll, which kinda picks itself this time round after the recent release of a US and EU patch. I guess for most people it was working fine before, but a vocal minority on the official forums have voiced their annoyance over some issues. The poll itself only refers to bugs rather than gameplay issues, but feel free to comment on it after voting.

| PATCH RELEASED - v 1.01 |
 |
| Posted on November 11, 2004 at 13:54 by Jon |
The long awaited patch for Evil Genius (US version only) has been released this evening. You can grab it from VU here, and fixes the following issues:
- Disguised sentry gun can now be researched.
- Sentry gun range increased.
- Agent AI fix for rooms behind locked doors.
- Glossary crash fixes for 2 hyperlinks.
- Rare loading crash.
- Rare crash involving monkeys.
- Extra hint added for objective 2 & the mixer.
- The second mess hall counter has been renamed to "mixer".
- Misleading "Load Save" option renamed to "Load and Save".
- Rare crash bug when deleting certain outdoor traps fixed.
- Rare crash bug when locking minions in during construction fixed.
- Minor scripting fix for a couple of objects.
- Minor fixes (text fixes & memory leaks).
- Rare crash in Training Fixed.
- Version added to Options screen.
- Research button sometimes missing when reloading a saved game fixed.
- Crash when saving during death cubicle animation fixed.
- Agent memory crash fixed (when agents are around during room detonation).
- Security desk crash fixed (holding down LMB to move it when it's destroyed).
- Body bag crash fixed (when reloaded and assigned to a destroyed freezer rack).
I am awaiting details on a patch for the EU version of the game. Ensure that you restart the game after installing this patch - old save games may still encounter errors otherwise. I also suggest a full reinstall if you have previously installed any unofficial mods.

| Activate secret henchman! |
 |
| Posted on November 11, 2004 at 09:35 by Jon |
For those of you who don't know, some outlets gave away a pre-order CD when purchasing Evil Genius with some bonus content. Much of the bonus stuff is pretty standard (images, video, etc), but one section was pretty major. Well, now the game has been out for a while, some forum members have worked out how to enable a hidden henchman, Lord Blackheart in any copy of the game. The download, which includes full instruction, can be found here (direct link). Thanks to nexus and P.A.T.R.I.O.T Infiltrator for putting this download together. Enjoy!

"The gameplay is honestly hopelessly addictive and it’s not hard to be lured into spending many hours improving your base, training your minions, and trying to gradually bring the world into your villainous grip." comments PC Game World whilst lavishing 86% on Evil Genius - a great score. GameBiz.au is slightly more restrained, offering a mere 70%, suggesting that it is "innovate" but "the sequal would need lots of work"...

| Patch Information |
 |
| Posted on November 1, 2004 at 06:30 by Jon |
There have been some discussions on the official forum about the impending release of a patch for Evil Genius to fix a number of issues. I have spoken to the producer of Evil Genius this afternoon, and he has confirmed that Elixir have created two patches (an US and EU version) which have been internally and externally tested. This patch, which Elixir are reportedly happy with, is now in the hands of the publishers, VU Games, who are naturally doing their own internal QA testing. It is now their decision when to release it, and neither Elixir nor us at Evil Planet can answer the question of when this might be.
When it is released, I will be hosting, and have further links as appropriate to external mirrors of both the US and EU versions.
Elixir mentioned to me that they have been working flat out to get the patch created, and thanks the Evil Genius community not only for their patience, but also for their support in sending bug reports and saved games in (via our forum), and are as keen as we are to see the patch released and allow you to enjoy Evil Genius as it was meant to be enjoyed!

Please could I remind all visitors that this site is not official (and therefore none of what I say is official), I have no more idea than anyone else when patches and so forth are coming out, and I am not technical support. The forums are around to help answer questions, so emailing gameplay questions to me will now not get a reponse. Since the game came out I've had about 500 emails asking for help / support or info that is on the site. I stopped replying to many at the 200 mark, as there are plenty of places to go for such information (not least the official site). Please save your time and mine by not asking such questions!
