Game Chronicles has reviewed Evil Genius, giving is 7.6/10, suggesting that whilst they would change areas of the gameplay, the rest of the game is excellant.

More research tree updates
Posted on October 30, 2004 at 04:04 by Jon

Thanks, Saintly, for pointing me in the direction of a selection of incorrect names, a few spelling errors and a few incorrect combinations on my research tree, which are now fixed. Rushing to get the guide out before release was one thing... getting every little details right was another...!

Minor research tree updates
Posted on October 29, 2004 at 02:59 by Jon

Thanks, forum member RIP (and others!) for sending in fixes to my research guide, which now has a few edits and the addition of details for getting the infirmary chair, an important item!

New reviews
Posted on October 29, 2004 at 02:48 by Jon

Some more for you to browse through. Game Daily offers 3/5, saying that whilst ther game is great fun, it can get a little frustrating when even your best laid trap systems get overrun. 3D Avenue has a more complimentary review with a pleasing 85% scoreline, suggesting that Evil Genius is a "very solid experience with gameplay you won't find anywhere else".

New reviews
Posted on October 28, 2004 at 04:20 by Jon

Yup... reviews are still trickling in. Two reviews today so far. XPG Gaming gives EG a decent write-up and a 7.9/10 score, saying that it's a great game for those who like such styles. Ultimate Army goes a notch higher with 8/10, saying in a short review that there is graphics and sound are especially good.

Jobs at Elixir
Posted on October 28, 2004 at 04:09 by Jon

Elixir Studios, developers of Evil Genius, have recently posted a list of new job openings to work on new projects at the company. There are positions open for artists, programmers and a producer, if you are looking for such work.

Competition info
Posted on October 28, 2004 at 03:13 by Jon

Apologies for the delay (caused through holiday and illness of various people), but all prizes for the recently finished "Design a Henchman" competition are in the post and, depending on your location and customs, should be with you soon.

Signed copies of the game are winging their way to five people, plus other prizes and the grand prize winner is looking forward to checking out Elixir in the early New Year.

As a side issue, there is a hidden page on this site that some people on the forums have been searching for, following hidden clues and frustrating puzzles... if you fancy grabbing a copy of the Republic: the Revolution CD by being the first to find the final of three secret pages, catch up by reading through the following forum thread (you can skip pass any messages in code on this page if you wish, as the conversation at the end is more pertenant to finding the elusive final page...)

Saved game collection
Posted on October 27, 2004 at 14:34 by Jon

Thanks, Johnny, for sending in a collection of save files - one at the start of every main objective. Whilst I haven't checked every save in the collection, I've been assured that the bases are pretty full with cool stuff. Anyway, they are all with Alexis on normal difficulty, so if you ever want to move further ahead in a game or access a clean save file, you can get the RAR collection of them here. More information on our Downloads (Misc.) page.

Evil Genius remains in PC Top 20
Posted on October 27, 2004 at 02:58 by Jon

For the fourth week, Evil Genius is in the PC Top 20 chart. Whilst now sitting a lowly 18th, it's it's still doing well. My local store has had no copies of EG for a week now, which may be explaining why it is falling slightly, but against the current competition, it's pretty good!

New review
Posted on October 27, 2004 at 02:35 by Jon

Gamers Hell have finally reviewed Evil Genius and given it a pleasing 8.5/10 (9 for gameplay, 8 for sound, 8.5 for graphics). Check it out!

Exclusive in-game music tracks
Posted on October 26, 2004 at 08:53 by Jon

Elixir have been kind enough to allow permission for me to post a load of the best music tracks from the game. If you haven't got the game yet, check out the awesome Main Menu theme, which should entice you to listen to more whilst playing the actual game!

Whilst the music is being mirrored around FilePlanet, I will host it on my forum space temporarily. You can download all the tracks from my audio page (a zip with all the music in one file will be avilable tomorrow on FilePlanet). Enjoy, and thanks to the sound guys at Elixir for getting these tracks together.

New column
Posted on October 26, 2004 at 08:20 by Jon

Thanks to Eric for sending in an excellant addition to our selection of columns and articles. This rather off-beat entry is a fun (if a little surreal) read... so check it out and use the suggestion within!

Reviews mixed bag!
Posted on October 25, 2004 at 05:03 by Jon

For those who can read them, I have been sent a list of all the Swedish reviews. Here's the lowdown: Level 7 (8/10), Nordic Gamers (8.5/10), AftonBladet (2/5...), Good Game (8/10) and Kong (3/5). RecLandet.nu also gave Evil Genius 9/10.

Update: I have also been sent some German reviews, which seem to enjoy Evil Genius a lot. Pro Gamerz gives Evil Genius "sehr gut" ("very good") and Gamigo offers 8.5/10, plus a gold star award. Nice.

Yet another Update: Some English reviews (for once!). One has been posted at Thumb Bandits offering 7/10 for a solid game "let down by a lack of multiplayer". It also views the game from a female standpoint. Another review, this time from Xequted gives EG 38/50 commenting that this is a game that you will want to go back many times.

Act of Infamy guide
Posted on October 25, 2004 at 05:00 by Jon

A list of every single Act of Infamy, it's requirements and payoffs is listed in this huge (downloadable .doc) document, submitted by reader Johnny Wu. It's not integrated into the site yet, as that will take some serious time, but this downloadable document has all the info (direct download, 50kb).

Unofficial patch update
Posted on October 25, 2004 at 03:59 by Jon

The unofficial patch, posted on our forums a few days back, has been updated. Whilst I should strongly point out that there are risks involved with installing anything unofficial (and may bring future problems with installing official patches), the fix list is still impressive:

  • Fixed the hanchmen stats, the times for acts of infamy are reduced like they should be, as are the heat ratings.
  • Population is now 150, instead of 100.
  • Can build all building in the hotel hub and hotel wings.
  • Can build hotel doors any where, they are cheaper than normal doors but weaker.
  • Sentry guns can be built inside as well as out.
  • Hotel casino, lounge and lobby can now be built inside the base.
  • The loot item Persian rug can now be walked on.
  • All gun cabinates can now be built in the barracks.
  • Removed the annoying BEEP BEEP sound on the control room.
  • Monkey cage (oliver, from an act of infamy should now be researchable).
  • Prisioners will live longer in the cell.
  • Most into movies skipped.
  • Hiding time on world dominition map is now 10mins.
  • Only sentry guns can be built in building, not disgiused ones.
  • Freaks shouldnt set traps off now, or at least not as much.
  • All loot items should carry over to the second island.
  • Totem pool is only transferable once complete, since it cant be put together on second island.
  • Fire Extinguisher placable in the hotel.
  • BodyGuard is now useful.
  • Security Cameras and speakers can be built in Hotel.
You can download the update from here.

New mods and tools
Posted on October 24, 2004 at 03:58 by Jon

Another day, another selection of the many cool mods currently doing the rounds in the modding section of the forums. I've not got FTP, so I can't post these articles properly yet, but for now here's a link to a comprehensive guide to creating new bodyguards, and a cool rock removing tool which can allow you to design bases without the hinderance of rocks in the way. Both are made by forum member Seipher.

Awesome layout designing tool
Posted on October 23, 2004 at 10:43 by Jon

A few days I mentioned a blank map of the second island, which is pretty big and often hard to use effectivly. Now, that map has been updated - to allow you to design your own full layouts of cool base designs, and to save them (and load others!). It really is an awesome tool, designed by forum member "slight" and well worth checking out (minor spoilers for those who are new to the game) here.

New review
Posted on October 22, 2004 at 10:15 by Jon

Game Arena has reviewed EG in a slick report, giving it 7/10. It cites slow areas as a bad point, but the concept, the art and the humour as good ones, commenting that "Evil Genius has the makings of a great, quirky game franchise".

Modding section updated
Posted on October 22, 2004 at 10:03 by Jon

Two exclusive new articles for you today in the modding section direct from the "Evil Genius Chat" community - our forums. Firstly, information and downloads for a henchmen mod pack which allows you to turn the Freak, Number 2 and many other characters into controlable henchmen. Secondly, an unofficial patch which you can take a look at and download if you wish. Thanks to the people who have contributed to and made these!

Modding section opened
Posted on October 21, 2004 at 03:19 by Jon

A new modding section has been opened here at Evil Planet. It includes, of course, our exclusive modding guide from the Lead Programmer of Evil Genius, and also two new articles on modding new henchmen and editing the population limit. There are many more mods and hacks being worked on which will soon be listed too, but go check what is already there at the modding section!

Just for fun
Posted on October 20, 2004 at 14:43 by Jon

Thanks, Steve, for pointing me towards this little test of evil "genius"...

Plans for later in the game
Posted on October 20, 2004 at 09:11 by Jon

A difficult post to make without containing spoilers this, but if you are fairly far on in the game, this map may help to sketch your base out before you design it. Thanks to forum member slight for the info, and whoever made the map for doing it!

Scheduled forum maintenance downtime
Posted on October 20, 2004 at 04:47 by Jon

To patch up some security holes found in our Apache server, the forums will be offline from 13:45 BST (12:45 GMT, 07:45 EST) for between 1-2 hours. Our apologies for the inconvience.

Reviews continued!
Posted on October 19, 2004 at 09:17 by Jon

A mixed bag of new reviews today. SciFi.com gives Eg a mediocre C+ for the simple reason that there is no fast forward button to speed up slower areas of the game. Four Fat Chicks offers a huge review full of rather depressing comments, some of which are reasonable and others which are less so. It concludes that the game has many fun areas but there is a lot to improve for number 2! GameFreaks365 contradicts Four Fat Chicks multiple times (one loves henchmen, the other hates them... go figure) but whilst laments areas of the gameplay, it complements all other sections bar the graphics ("blocky like all Sierra games"...) and gives EG 7.9/10.

Evil Genius in charts for third week
Posted on October 19, 2004 at 07:11 by Jon

Evil Genius is now 14th in the official "top 20" charts, following a 3 position slip from 11th last week. More information.

Perkins trailers on official site
Posted on October 18, 2004 at 04:58 by Jon

You can now view all four Perkins trailers on the official site in a variety of streaming forms. You can, of course, also download them along with all the other Evil Genius videos from my video page.

New Poll
Posted on October 18, 2004 at 04:35 by Jon

A new poll is up on the site as you should be able to see - if you have played the game, then go vote!

In the last poll, which saw several thousand entries, 29% said it was "absolutely excellant", 50% said it was "really enjoyable", 13% "pretty cool", 5% offered a "so-so" and happily only 1% retorted that it was "not for them!".

AOI Locations Guide
Posted on October 18, 2004 at 02:11 by Jon

Thanks to forum member HomoUniversalis, we have a short guide on Evil Planet which tells you where to find all the cool AOI's (Acts of Infamy) in the world map. Check it out!

New reviews
Posted on October 18, 2004 at 02:10 by Jon

Thanks, Robbo, for pointing out that PCPP gave Evil Genius 74% and a "PCPP Game of Credit" award.

Gamers Temple has also posted a decent review with a 74% final score, although site visitors give it 89%, at time of writing.

There are now around 45 different reviews listed on my reviews page, with an average score of exactly 80%.

A polite message
Posted on October 16, 2004 at 11:19 by Jon

I get around 15 emails a day from community members.. often with news, information about the game, postive/negative comments on the site, comments about errors and so forth. It's great - a really useful resource and one I really couldn't do without. Hell, I don't even mind the idiots who flame me either - at least they have taken the time to!

However today, like many other days, I logged into Hotmail to find 8 seperate e-mails, all but one of them asking for game information and technical issues. Please please please remember that this site is not official, I am not VU Technical Support and I can't answer your questions (or even if I could, I don't have the time). I even get emails from people asking questions which are already answered on the site and who don't consider using the forums where they will get a much quicker answer.

So please, guys - send me all the news, info and comments you want, but if you have a problem with the game, there are better places to take your question...

Evil Genius remains comfortably in charts
Posted on October 16, 2004 at 03:37 by Jon

Now after being in the UK charts for 2 weeks, Evil Genius sits a comfortable 11th. Let's hope it can even rise for next week...

Evil Genius released in New Zealand
Posted on October 16, 2004 at 03:34 by Jon

EG has finally reached the fair shores of NZ, so go check out your local store if you live there and have been waiting for the game.

The forums are back... with a vengeance!
Posted on October 15, 2004 at 07:41 by Jon

Yup - that was a seriously annoying few days with no access to the forums, huh? Well - instead of waiting for Gamespy to get the forums back after their security breach, we decided to speed things up by finding some new hosting instead. And with a major thanks to forum member and IRC fan Quiky, who has offered some awesome hosting, we are back. His generosity is much appreciated.

Things are not all plain sailing, however. As FTP is down on our old hosting, we have been unable to get the very latest versions of the databases, meaning that around 24 hours worth of posting has gone. This is really annoying, but I know you guys will ignore this issue and get back to chatting - feel free to recreate any chat threads you started, and I'm sure things will pick up again really quickly. If you signed up in the last 24 hours, you will also need to sign up again.

So - what are you waiting for? Go check out the forums!

Forums news
Posted on October 15, 2004 at 03:46 by Jon

Well, as Gamespy won't be able to get forums back until Monday, we have decided to move the forums, yet again. Thanks to forum member Quiky, we have some awesome fast hosting which is being set up this afternoon - hopefully we will all be back chatting today. Many thanks to him for his generosity.

Reviews...
Posted on October 15, 2004 at 03:46 by Jon

German site Mega Gaming has given Evil Genius 83% and a decent write up...

CNN.com has also posted a review of the game, citing micromanagement issues amongst the minor errors in an otherwise enjoyable game.

Norman Chan of PC Gamer US has given EG an 88%. Highs: Clever design; great retro look; plenty of gameplay twists; subtle humor. Lows: Some frustratingly slow parts; the good guys are really wimpy; limited replayability. Bottom Line: Evil reigns supreme in this diabolically charming base-builder game. Thanks to the guys who emailed in this one.

PlayBoy reviews EG
Posted on October 14, 2004 at 06:05 by Jon

Yup - Playboy has reviewed Evil Genius and gives it 87% - not bad at all. Be warned - one or two of the adverts on the link page may be NSFW!

FileFront also offers up its comments on the game, giving a disappointing 3/5.

External FAQs and Guides
Posted on October 13, 2004 at 14:31 by Jon

A quick look at Game FAQs shows that there are two decent guides up - one which is a general and reasonably comprhensive guide to objects and characters, and another giving hints on room building. Well worth a look.

Evil Planet IRC chat channel
Posted on October 13, 2004 at 07:56 by Jon

While the forums are down, why not check out our newly opened IRC channel? Thanks to Don who helped set it up, you can now hopefully find other interested chatters at http://www.gamesurge.net (server: irc.gamesurge.net, channel: #evilplanet). Not quite the forums, but a decent alternative!

Evil Genius released in Australia
Posted on October 13, 2004 at 01:55 by Jon

Thanks, Charles, and others who mentioned that Evil Genius is now being sold in Australia - run down to your nearest EB store and pick it up!

Forums - yup, I'm annoyed too...
Posted on October 13, 2004 at 01:52 by Jon

It seems the security breach I mentioned yesterday with Gamespy's forum hosting servers is more serious than I initially thought, as we enter our second day without any life on our forums. They have switched off the host servers until the problem can be sorted out, so there is simply nothing I can do until they decide to switch them on again. My apologies, once again, for the downtime.

Your input needed!
Posted on October 12, 2004 at 09:02 by Jon

This site is a big place to run on my own (well, I get help with the forums, but I'm talking about the main site specifically). If you are writing a FAQ, a guide, or an article about the game and would like to help me out and help the community out by offering it to be hosted here, I'd be more than happy to speak to you. Contact me here.

On a similar topic, thanks to those who emailed in to point out a few missing entries in the Research Guide - they have now been updated.

Competition entries
Posted on October 12, 2004 at 03:06 by Jon

As promised, I have posted a selection of the competition entries that won first, second or third prizes in the recent Evil Planet "Design a Henchman" compeition. You can read them all here and see a full list of the winners here.

A few more reviews...
Posted on October 12, 2004 at 02:17 by Jon

Game Plasma (7.6/10 - good comments), Game Over (75%, "good but patience needed"), Gamer Archive (7/10) and Access Gamer (6.8/10, suggests a good idea but flawed execution, although I don't understand why they said there is no cool music in the game...).

UPDATE: A few more reviews have come my way. Real Gamer has a review which is not always easy to read, but gives EG a solid 7/10. A longer and much more in-depth review can be read at Games Xtreme which not only lavishes out with a 85% scoreline, but has many hints and tips for gameplay.

Forums down (security reasons)
Posted on October 12, 2004 at 01:50 by Jon

Gamespy have informed me that their entire dynamic server group, on which I host my forums, is down due to a security breach. they are working hard to ensure it gets back online, but until it does, there is nothing I can do. Please be patient!

Competition winners!
Posted on October 11, 2004 at 09:09 by Jon

Okey dokey - I've had a horrible afternoon culling some really good entries and deciding on which should get the prizes in our exclusive competition, but I've managed it at last! I'll be posting a selection of the winning entries on the site within the next 24 hours, but if you entered and want to know if you won, then here are all the results.

EG enters sales charts at #9
Posted on October 11, 2004 at 07:29 by Jon

GamesIndustry has details of this month's sales in the UK, and Evil Genius (despite not being out for long) is sitting happily in the list...

New review
Posted on October 11, 2004 at 07:25 by Jon

ESCmag editor Andy Grieser says if you have a little patience, Evil Genius rewards with plenty of maniacal world-domination laughs - and that sounds pretty good to me. An impressive 8/10 is awarded for "awesome music" and "good graphics" too.

Forum (brief) Outage
Posted on October 11, 2004 at 06:53 by WebNutMark

Interest and traffic to our forums have surpassed even our wildest expectations - we have used up the entire month's bandwidth already. We will be moving the forums to a different server shortly. The outage should (hopefully) last less than an hour.

We appologize in advance and thank you for your understanding.

Edit Move is complete - still working on a couple of things - avatars and search - but the rest is good to go!

Thanks for your patience!

TomsHardware review
Posted on October 11, 2004 at 02:36 by Jon

No score, but the final lines sums up as follows: "Laborious but addictive, challenging but imaginative, I suggest you pick up Evil Genius and try taking over the world". Check the rest out here.

Evil Genius mods!
Posted on October 10, 2004 at 06:08 by Jon

It seems that the Evil Genius community is starting to get some decent mods into circulation for those of you who like to play around with your copy of the game. There are mods to change camera angles, turn hostages into minions, change henchmen into Evil Genius', fix varied bug issues and a whole lot more... have a browse around the modding sectionof our forums for more!

Did you check out our wiki yet?
Yeah, I even added a thing or two.
Yeah, it's looking good so far!
Yeah, but I don't really see the point.
No, but I surely will!
No, and I don't suppose I will.
Huh? What IS a wiki?
