Character page update
Posted on August 26, 2004 at 02:41 by Jon

I have updated the characters page again, as promised, with exclsuive info about three of the Super Agents in the game (there are five in total, although the others are not known about). Spoilers and more kick-ass images from Dennis await at the characters section.

James Hannigan interview (II)
Posted on August 25, 2004 at 03:11 by Jon

The second part of PC Games News' interview with James Hannigan has gone online. It's an excellant read, like the first part, but unlike the first part does not focus on Evil Genius. James Hannigan, for those who don't know, is the composer for Evil Genius' music, and also did the music for Republic.

New hands-on preview
Posted on August 25, 2004 at 03:10 by Jon

This time it's from HomeLanFed. It comments on the cartoon feel, the general ideas about the game and quite a bit on the differences between Evil Genius and Republic, Elixir Studio's first game. It doesn't come to many conclusions about the game, but it's worth looking at.

Characters page updated
Posted on August 25, 2004 at 03:00 by Jon

I have updated the characters page with details of six high level minions now that information about them has been released. There is not always loads of text as details are scant, but as always there are some awesome pictures with a cool Evil Planet touch from Dennis. I won't mention what they are, as they include spoilers, but if you are interested in checking them out, then clicky clicky!

New screenshots
Posted on August 24, 2004 at 01:53 by Jon

IGN have posted a bunch of new screenshots taken by themselves which show various evil deeds around the base. The first shot is good as it shows the various stages of room building. Check them out!

New hands-on preview
Posted on August 24, 2004 at 01:50 by Jon

Gamespy sister site, IGN, who have followed Evil Genius quite closely over the last few months, have finally posted their hands-on preview of Evil Genius. It doesn't specifically mention any bad points, but has plenty good to say. It's also a good introduction to the game for anyone new to it.

Edit: one of the game designers has commented on the preview on my forums in this thread.

New column
Posted on August 23, 2004 at 06:09 by Jon

Forum member robmc recently posted a list of reasons to buy Evil Genius. It was a great read and now, with the help of a few extra suggestions, the "50 reasons to buy Evil Genius" column is now up on this site. Take a look, and feel free to comment on it in the forum thread.

Things are really hotting up here now that Evil Genius is GOLD and the demo will be released in a week. The forums, especially, are going pretty crazy with new posters and mountains of interesting debates, chat about the game, general gaming, and the obligatory off-topic conversations.

We even have the producer, the executive producer, the lead designer, two more designers and testers who have all signed up and are answering questions and chatting to the community. How many other dev teams do that?!

Join in now and be a regular by the time the game is released... it's all kicking off at the Evil Planet forums.

New hands-on preview
Posted on August 20, 2004 at 06:59 by Jon

Armchair Empire deliver the goods with a decent little preview of Evil Genius. It really does reserve judgement on the game, although has plenty of good to say aside from the notable point (which has been raised in other previews) about the slow start to the game due to a lack of minions. As it happens, seasoned gamers will soon find ways of getting more minions pretty quickly, although it's something that will be interesting to read more about in the next few weeks. Check it out.

New poll
Posted on August 20, 2004 at 06:41 by Jon

The poll has (finally) been updated again with the classic "Will you buy Evil Genius" question. Hopefully one of the answers given will suit what you think about the game's chances and whether you will fork out the cash...

Don't forget that the new poll system means that forum members can comment on the ongoing polls and any previous ones. Go sign up and join in!

James Hannigan and Evil music...
Posted on August 20, 2004 at 04:42 by Jon

An engrossing and in-depth interview with Evil Genius' composers, James Hannigan, has been posted on Game Zone. It doesn't focus copmpletely on Elixir and Evil Genius, but a good portion of the questions deal with desiging the style of the music, the implementation, working with the talented audio team and other more generic music matters. It's well worth looking at. Here's a short section:
They have a strong sound department led by Richard Joseph, who is a veteran of games, and we always discuss things a lot when we work together. The designers of the game had an idea of the overall direction they wanted, the spy film connotations and film genres, etc. But the actual implementation side was left to us. That's rare, I can tell you. But you probably know that. The audio coder, Andy Mucho, is great and will really work with me in implementing ‘interactive music’. I think there is great potential for going in that direction in future, where it is perhaps needed for more sophisticated interactive music. I’ve often felt the industry needs to get its act together in terms of implementation, making music flow more seamlessly in games – and in concealing any underlying technology (the whirring of disks, etc.). All this fading in and out, stopping and starting, etc. - which we are all accustomed to and mostly accept - simply tells players music is comprised of a series of ‘tracks’ triggered by events in-game; like clockwork. I think music needs to be better integrated with games in future, almost to the extent players don’t single it out and it becomes part of the fabric of the whole playing experience.

The characters page here at Evil Planet has been quickly updated with the latest henchman bio details, plus an updated minion list following new information from screenshots.

New Henchman bio - the Matron
Posted on August 20, 2004 at 01:43 by Jon

IGN have posted their latest henchman bio - this time about the matron. It gives a brief summery of her background, including her two special abilities. With the article is a short video (complete with Matron's cool voice) and a bunch of screenshots.

Release dates confirmed
Posted on August 19, 2004 at 04:14 by Jon

A post on the Elixir Studios homepage confirms the finalised release dates. There are a few days between the two different release dates, but nothing to get too worried about, I'm sure. The dates are:

America - 28th September
Europe/Rest of World - 1st October

Exec. Producer comments on Evil Planet
Posted on August 19, 2004 at 04:03 by Jon

The executive producer, Adrian Bolton, has posted his first of hopefully many posts on our Evil Planet forums. The post concerns the issues of the release date confusion which still continues...

Full game credits online
Posted on August 19, 2004 at 04:02 by Jon

Another Evil Planet exclusive - the full game credits have now been posted here on the site, including, where relevant, links to their forum names. Go take a look and see who make up the very talented team.

28 new screenshots posted
Posted on August 19, 2004 at 03:36 by Jon

Gamespot have posted 28 new screenshots which I'm guessing they took themselves with their preview version of the game. One shot is pretty cool - this one - which shows a couple of the early missions.

Evil Genius given "Teen" rating
Posted on August 19, 2004 at 02:12 by Jon

No blood and no decapitations, but some rather evil behaviour nevertheless has meant that Evil Genius has been given a "teen" rating by the ESRB. No suprises there then...

Release date moved closer?
Posted on August 19, 2004 at 02:08 by Jon

An official announcement earlier this week pinned the date for Evil Genius' release as the 1st October - but the latest news from VU Games and other online reports is that the previous date, that of September 28th, looks to be the date when you can finally get your grubby mitts on the game. This date, you may know, was the original date meaning that if it is in the stores by then, then it will have not slipped a single day. Remarkable.

EDIT: - confirmation of release dates just released - see above

New hands-on preview
Posted on August 19, 2004 at 01:49 by Jon

Gamespot come up with the goods this time around with a short but decent article on Evil Genius. Check it - and then start counting down the days till the demo is out!

Posted on August 18, 2004 at 14:33 by Jon

Yes - the news you guys have all been looking forward to! Evil Genius is GOLD and will be on store shelves on the 1st October.

It's awesome news, it really is - a big congratulations to the team who have worked so hard for so long on it.

Get ready for mountains of EG coverage as we work towards the big day! Creds to VE3d for getting first news.

New preview in PC Zone
Posted on August 18, 2004 at 01:45 by Jon

UK mag PC ZONE has a 2 page preview of Evil Genius in their upcoming issue. It's pretty standard, but it *is* hands-on, so grab it if you can.

Forums smash past 20,000 posts
Posted on August 14, 2004 at 13:31 by Jon

A massive 500 posts a day are hitting the Evil Planet forums in the run up to the release of the demo, and with today's forum posting competition (along with continued Evil genius related posting) the post number has smashed the 20,000 post mark and moving fast.

Why not be a part of it?

Evil Planet media updates
Posted on August 14, 2004 at 10:54 by Jon

The recently released mp3 of the game has been uploaded by myself to FilePlanet - you can now get it here (1.3meg, MP3).

Along with that, I have also uploaded an (exclusive?) 32meg DivX version of the recently released trailer. This is decent quality, but half the size of the original release. It's here.

Note that, as normal, all files on FilePlanet which I upload are on special private servers which very rarely have any queues.

New preview
Posted on August 14, 2004 at 08:21 by Jon

One of the better new previews, because it's hands-on, Game Revolution have whipped up a decent, and very complimentary preview of the game. It mentions the slick presentation, the ease of use, the fun campy humour and the great integration in the game. Good stuff, so check it out.

Release date confirmed
Posted on August 14, 2004 at 08:18 by Jon

Vivendi, the publishers of Evil Genius, have confirmed that the release date (for at least America and UK) is to be the 1st October. This means that since the game's first line of code was written, the release date has slipped a mere 3 days - which deserves more than just a round of applause! Thanks to those who emailed me, and Gamespot for the news.

Downtime problems
Posted on August 13, 2004 at 09:12 by Jon

For those of you who regularly use the forums (which are really busy at the moment, which is great) you will no doubt have noticed the extended periods of downtime recently. There is an ongoing problem which seems to be affecting just the server that my forums are on, causing the server to run very slow or occasionally, not at all. The "contact us" form, which uses the same server is also occasionally affected.

Gamespy know about this problem and I am working with them and speaking to them on a daily basis to try and get the problem resolved. Please bear with us whilst we do, and my apologies for any problems you come across.

New preview
Posted on August 13, 2004 at 02:24 by Jon

Video Games Life has done a one-page preview (hands-off) of Evil Genius, summing up the game ideas and their feelings about the game. They sum it up at the end with "As the deadline for Evil Genius’ doomsday device closes in on us, we at VGL are getting quietly excited about the potential this title has". Good stuff!

Large boxart version
Posted on August 12, 2004 at 10:15 by Jon

OK - it's not technically the proper boxart, nor is it actually perfectly correct (one of the characters has three arms in this picture - not in the game, luckily), but this picture should give you a pretty good idea of what the boxart is going to be like.

Evil Genius highlighted on Gamespy
Posted on August 12, 2004 at 09:38 by Jon

Top of the Gamespy page is "The Daily Warriors" comment. This time it's about everyone's favourite game:
It's EEEVIL! The more I read about Evil Genius, the more I think this game will fulfill just about every fantasy I had about playing in the world of a campy secret agent adventure. From 007 to Flint to Austin Powers, the game seems to have it all. And you get to be the bad guy. I'm in.

New preview
Posted on August 12, 2004 at 02:07 by Jon

My hosts, Gamespy, have recently had the chance to have a hands-on playtest of Evil Genius. The preview is very complimentary, save for a couple of minor issues. Check it out - it's a good read.

New trailer
Posted on August 12, 2004 at 01:37 by Jon

Fileplanet have recently put up a new 75meg trailer for Evil Genius. It is very enjoyable indeed - especially with the producer's voiceover through it!

Get it here.

Boxart Revealed
Posted on August 11, 2004 at 02:10 by Jon

Seems the official boxart has come to light on Vivendi's shop page. Looks good - I'll try and get a larger version in the near future.

Gamespot goodies!
Posted on August 11, 2004 at 01:49 by Jon

Gamespot have gone Evil Genius mad and posted a raft of new things. There is a fourth developer diary, this week focusing on making and editing the sound in the game. Along with this is a downloadable MP3 from the menu which is a good catchy tune (left click and use Gamespot's download utility). There are four new screenshots to add to the large collection updated yesterday. Last but not least, there are three new gameplay movies (numbers 5,6, and 7) which show base building, cell capture and one of the hint videos.

Phew! What a list! Go check them out!

Statistical screenshots galore!
Posted on August 10, 2004 at 02:32 by Jon

A great big bunch of very new screenshots are online at Gamespot (will be on this site shortly). They include images of many stat screens, the world map, the third secret Evil Genius, missions, new base images and loads more. Spoiler warning, but check them out if you don't mind. A basic explanation of many of the screens can be found in one of my forum posts.

New character bios
Posted on August 9, 2004 at 11:37 by Jon

The characters section here at Evil Planet has been updated again. This time, the construction worker, and three other basic minion types. A funky picture (thanks Dennis) acompanies each one, along with some basic information about what each character can do. Spoiler warning, naturally.

Updated room info
Posted on August 6, 2004 at 09:39 by Jon

Here at Evil Planet, the quest for complete details and information about all areas of the game continues! In the Rooms and Items section you will now find details on three more rooms (namely the control room, missile silo and freezer) and updated item lists in several other rooms following their apperance in recent screenshots.

Please please contact me if there is anything you know about in the game which isn't listed in the stats pages. Having extensivly tested the game, I'm beginning to find it very difficult to know what details are already in the public knowledge!

Red Ivan video released
Posted on August 5, 2004 at 01:58 by Jon

It arrived a good two weeks after the original article by IGN, but better late than never, I suppose! This 5.5 meg (free download)is great fun - not least because it shows the awesome grenade jig. Confused? Stream it, or download it (right click, save target as).

Thanks, Matt.

Character page update
Posted on August 4, 2004 at 10:29 by Jon

The characters page has been updated with complete details of Eli and Red Ivan, following the release of full information on Gamespy sister site, IGN. Good stuff!

New column
Posted on August 4, 2004 at 10:05 by Jon

An excellent new column is up from forum member robmc. It's entitled "Which Evil Genius are You?", and as you might expect, it explains many different types of Evil Genius types, asking you which you would choose. I should add that the selection in his article is not specifically related to the game, but it's a fun read nevertheless. Check it out!

Have you checked out the forums today?
Posted on August 3, 2004 at 07:27 by WebNutMark

Besides being a fun place to visit and meet people, the forums are also an excellent source of news and information about the game. For a great summary of how notoriety and heat affect the gameplay read forum member Maniacal Matt's great article here.

Secret Evil Genius character
Posted on August 2, 2004 at 13:00 by Jon

The recent TVG article (link below) let slip the name of the third and previously secret Evil Genius character - Shen Yu. He is described as "exotic, enigmatic and psycotic", and I'll try and get an image as soon as possible!

New TVG developer diary
Posted on August 2, 2004 at 10:21 by Jon

TotalVideoGames, who really do do the best of the Evil Genius diaries on the 'net (mainly because of this), have posted their fouth which focuses on gameplay and how the game has been designed. It's a fun, interesting read and well worth the 10 mins it will take to check it out. It even talks about the testing team, of which I am currently a member if you were unaware. Alongside, there is a video of Eli (which I'm not sure is new or not). Good stuff.

Exclusive: Provisional game specs
Posted on July 29, 2004 at 10:41 by Jon

In this forum post I have posted provisional minimum and recommended specs for playing the demo and the full versions of Evil Genius. They are fairly reasonable, and most should be able to meet at least the minimum. Take a look if the game interests you!

New screenshot collection
Posted on July 29, 2004 at 10:00 by Jon

The screenshot collection here at Evil Planet has been updated with the best of the various screenshots and other images to be released alongside the latest previews and diaries on major sites. It's a good, varied collection, so go check them out. Thanks to Dennis for the thumbnails.

New column
Posted on July 27, 2004 at 10:19 by Jon

A young new writer recently contacted Evil Planet to do a few columns. I agreed to let him have a go, and his first test article is now up and available here. Your comments would be much appreciated in this forum thread. Please note that Evil Planet does not edit submissions except for occasional minor mistakes and privatly discussed edits. Anyone else wishing to write columns is welcome to contact me.

New Red Ivan screenshots
Posted on July 27, 2004 at 09:59 by Jon

A little late, it seems, but images to go alongside IGN's recent Red Ivan preview have now been put on their website. Check them out here. Not sure what to make of the first which mentions an October release date though.

Thanks, Maniacal_Matt.

Exclusive: Demo news
Posted on July 26, 2004 at 12:04 by Jon

The news you guys have been waiting for for a long time no doubt - the demo version of Evil Genius is practically completed. It is, of course, up to Vivendi to decide when to release it (the date is still shrouded in mystery) but I'm guessing mid-August. They don't want it too early before the release of the game, for obvious reasons. It won't be long, though.

More details when I can get them. Start licking your lips though - I've played it and loved it.

Did you check out our wiki yet?
Yeah, I even added a thing or two.
Yeah, it's looking good so far!
Yeah, but I don't really see the point.
No, but I surely will!
No, and I don't suppose I will.
Huh? What IS a wiki?
