Evil Genius on Sky 1
Posted on July 25, 2004 at 14:24 by Jon

Forum member Hunter_Havok kindly sent in the following snippet of info today... make of it what you will!
There's a 'first glance' preview of Evil Genius on 'Gamesville' (Sky One). It was most likely filmed a while back but there was a mention of a Q1 2005 release date. I think it will be repeated later today on Sky One mix but I'm not sure.
Just in case you were worried, I currently have absolutely no reason to think that the date will be anything like that far away.

Exclusive clips of Evil Genius music
Posted on July 24, 2004 at 05:53 by Jon

Another Evil Planet exclusive - some of the first clips of music to be released by Elixir Studios from their upcoming game. This 1 minute clip (950kb, FilePlanet registration required) is a great little selection of 5 different pieces of music put together for the site by Richard Joseph, the guy at Elixir who does organises all the sound for the game.

It's a great selecion of tunes that, whist short, will nevertheless give you a great idea of the type of music to expect in the finished game. Thanks, Richard, and enjoy!

New Poll
Posted on July 23, 2004 at 01:50 by Jon

Another week, another poll, another change in poll features. The poll is now closely tied in with the forums so registered voters will be able to comment on the thread. Don't worry - those of you who are not can still vote!

Last week's poll results are here.

New Gamespot Dev Diary
Posted on July 21, 2004 at 01:42 by Jon

Elixir artists Siko and Matt Clarke are the authors of this month's developer diary on Gamespot, which is fast becoming a very enjoyable collection of diary entries. This third installment covers, as you might expect, character design and art creation, from the initial paper drawings, to clay models and finally the finished 3D model on the computer. Well worth a read. Thanks, OpFlash.

Previews page update
Posted on July 20, 2004 at 10:33 by Jon

Having remained in hibernation for a couple of months, I dusted off the previews page today and updated it with all the main previews, interviews and developer diaries I've linked to in the past 6 months. It makes for some good reading if you have an hour to waste...

New poll
Posted on July 16, 2004 at 09:23 by Jon

We have a new poll in more ways than one - not only do we have a new question, but also a neat new poll system which has no adverts. Thanks, WebNutMark!

This should be an interesting new poll - I am eager to see which of the five (well-known) henchman listed on this site so far is the most popular. If you don't know anything about the henchmen, take a look at my characters page which has basic info and pictures. Why not discuss the poll in the forum too?

New preview
Posted on July 14, 2004 at 12:59 by Jon

A short new preview, highlighting Evil Genius alongside other upcoming Vivendi releases, is up on UGO.

Golden Joystick Awards
Posted on July 14, 2004 at 12:39 by Jon

The voting for the annual Golden Joystick awards has begun. The winners will be announced in November, but why not show your support for Evil Genius in all suitable categories?

It's all here. Go on! Do it! Now!

Updated release date
Posted on July 12, 2004 at 02:30 by Jon

OK - for some of you this isn't anything new. However, as the release date approaches, it's becoming rather stupid to keep saying "Q3 2004". So, I had a look round a couple of sites (like Amazon and other gaming websites), and came to the conclusion that September 28th seems to be the choice of most. So - until I hear anything official - September 28th is the date I'm saying.

In related news, there is stillno date available for the demo, but I am making an educated guess at early August. More when I get it.

Finally, welcome to Dennis (who wrote the post below this). As he says, he's here to help out with the screenshots section, and his assistance is much appreciated. Welcome!

Small screenshots update
Posted on July 11, 2004 at 12:14 by Dennis

I updated the thumbnails in the screenshots section. Nothing major, but now the thumbs are more in feel with the look of EvilPlanet.

And while we're on the subject, I'll be taking over updating the screenshots section from now on. Some of you may know me from the forums as "Dennis" (surprise!), and some of you might remember me from the RepRev forum as "monoxism".

Anyway, I'm lean, mean and here to stay, get used to it punks! :)

Red Ivan profile on IGN
Posted on July 10, 2004 at 13:22 by Jon

It took a while - I almost thought IGN were giving up on their character profiles - but the next one is up, this time giving an in-depth view of Red Ivan, another of the henchmen in Evil Genius. It's enjoyable to read, but sadly there seem to be no new screenshots or videos.

It's all here. Thanks, Matt.

Site updates
Posted on July 5, 2004 at 10:59 by Jon

At this time of rather slow news, I've taken the chance to clean up the site a little more. You may now notice that the section headings in the left hand menu are now active, and link to pages outlining the section in question.

Nothing too exciting, but it may help to explain any sections of the site you find confusing. Can I also ask that if you find any bad links in the new sections (I have not had the chance to test them all) then please tell me about it! Thanks!

Come on! Join in!
Posted on July 4, 2004 at 14:53 by Jon

I never fail to be impressed at the dedication of the forum members here. Whilst the member count is a rather low 130-something as I type, we have managed to knock out well over 15,000 posts about the game and many other topics. It's a warm, welcoming community with a great misxture of people who activly work to keep the conversation flowing.

When the game comes out new members will undoubtedly flood in, as they discover Evil Genius and want to ask questions. Many of these people are great posters but get lost in the sea of new members. So why wait!? Join up now whilst the numbers are managable and really get to know everyone else (hell, you'll be a veteren by the time the game is release, let alone a "regular"!).

It's all happening right over here.

Competition winners!
Posted on July 1, 2004 at 10:25 by Jon

Thanks to everyone who entered their work to the recent Evil Planet wallpaper competition. There were some technically excellant entries, and some really fun ones too. Others were just crazy, and most likely would not be understood by anyone other than regular forum members.

The winners, plus all the entries, are viewable here.

Wallpaper collection added
Posted on July 1, 2004 at 10:24 by Jon

Combining the wallpapers from the recent Evil Planet competition with the various wallpapers available from around the 'net, this new screenshot collection is certainly worth checking out!

New developer diary
Posted on July 1, 2004 at 02:06 by Jon

Total Video Games has once again done the business and come up with an excellant 3rd update to its series of developer diaries. This one features an in-depth discussion about the complexities and features of the Totality Engine and the other techie sides of getting a game like Evil Genius looking good. Check it all out here.

With it are a batch of new screenshots, which will be on this site as soon as possible. This one, of Red Ivan in full flow is particularly good.

Oh - and remember lead designer Sandy's "Kinder Whip" from last month's update? Feel the need to actually see it up close and personal? Enjoy...

Poll updated
Posted on June 30, 2004 at 09:55 by Jon

Nope - your eyes don't deceive you! The poll actually has been updated!

The last poll was left for a long time to purposely to get a lot of results... but it's now time to move on and get some more regular changes. The next poll is pretty standard, but hopefully in the future some really interesting questions could be posed. Got a suggestion for one? Tell us!.

Poll results can be seen here.

Columnists and Articles wanted!
Posted on June 30, 2004 at 09:13 by Jon

You may have noticed that there is a section of this site which is available to host articles, letters and interesting "columns" from visitors - but it's a little quiet! It would be really good to have some input from visitors, regular or not, about anything to do with the game, good or bad. As long as it's constructive and would be enjoyable for others to read, why not have a go? There may even be a small prize for those who regularly contribute work to the site.

Use the feedback form to request more information or contact me about getting your work online.

Feedback form fixed
Posted on June 30, 2004 at 09:00 by Jon

Not sure how long it was down for, but WebNutMark has very kindly fixed whatever issues there were. You are now more than welcome to use it to comment on the game or the website, ask questions, provide news and inquire about working here. It's here if you would like to use it.

On a similar note, the rather confusing bad link to the "Webmaster Info" section of the site has also been fixed... for those who are really interested, you can see who has helped make this site.

50,000 visitors
Posted on June 29, 2004 at 14:30 by Jon

Congratulations and thanks to everyone who has visited, or indeed regularly visits here - we've notched 50,000 visitors and counting...

Rooms and Items pages updated
Posted on June 29, 2004 at 10:14 by Jon

Taking information only from the screenshots and previews in the public eye (so for those of you looking for spoilers and unreleased information, sorry!), I have put together a load of info pages for the different rooms and items in Evil Genius. Thanks, as always, to Dennis for the awesome pictures. Enjoy looking through them - they should whet your appetite for the game somewhat! It's all here.

Traps page updated
Posted on June 28, 2004 at 10:58 by Jon

Thanks, as always, to Dennis for helping me in updating the traps page (spoiler warning) to include basic information and screenshots of all publically released traps and torture devices. This should get your mouth watering in anticipation!

Screenshot / Image competition
Posted on June 26, 2004 at 01:39 by Jon

You probably know about my wallpaper and funny picture competition (if not, there are full details here - you can win an official Republic: The Revolution CD!). Anyway - the closing date is the end of this month, so if you want to get a chance to win one of the two prizes we have, get your imaging program booted up :).

Six new screenshots
Posted on June 26, 2004 at 01:33 by Jon

Some cool new screenshots, which actually show off some items, if not rooms, which have not surfaced publically before. They are currently here at Gamespot (warning: some items shown are new, therefore possible spoilers), and they will soon be uploaded to Evil Planet. It's good to get these new screenshots out, because it means I can start writing a bit more about the different rooms and items, now much of the detail is in the public knowledge.

New Developer Diary
Posted on June 26, 2004 at 01:29 by Jon

There are two sites at the moment which are kinda battling it out to post the most interesting developer diaries. One of them is Gamespot, which yesterday posted its second in what hopefully will be a pretty decent collection of rambligs from the Elixir camp.

And ramblings is just the word - take a look at what Sandy, lead designer on Elixir, has to say and you'll be wondering whether anyone slipped something into his coffee (and I've contemplated it!). Take a look and decide for yourself. It's a very enjoyable read, and makes some excellant points. Thanks Matt.

Character images updated
Posted on June 25, 2004 at 09:59 by Jon

Although Vivendi have, fairly enough, not allowed me to post character information, it seems reasonable to assume that my own images of major characters that have appeared in screenshots are OK to put online. My characters page therefore has links to to images ("sexified" by Dennis - thanks!) for the major characters. Enjoy... and look out for further updates soon.

French Evil Genius fansite open
Posted on June 25, 2004 at 09:58 by Jon

The first fansite besides this one has appeared on the internet - in French. It's a site which follows several games, including both Evil Genius and Republic, but is worth quickly checking out if French is your thing.

Screenshots page added
Posted on June 25, 2004 at 08:31 by Jon

23 new screenshots and other images have been added to the site - a long overdue update of the E3 2004 and Eli images that surfaced in the last month. The GUI of many screenshots is already out of date, but otherwise they're pretty good! Check them out here.

Great new image of Alexis
Posted on June 25, 2004 at 06:25 by Jon

Alexis, the second or three different evil genius' that you can play as, is being slowly unveiled by Vivendi. This excellant screenshot from IGN shows her off in all her curvy glory.

Evil Genius strategy guide in the works
Posted on June 23, 2004 at 05:56 by Jon

Musing through a couple of websites, I cam across this page which advertises, and allows you to pre-order the official Prima Strategy Guide for Evil Genius. To be perfectly honest, I'm not suprised it's being produced, but I'm interested in how it works and the slant it will take to playing the game. There are certainly lots of stats and useful information on research, etc, which could be included... but I guess we'll have to wait to find out.

If I can find the guy at Elixir who is helping to make it, I'll see if I can get some more info.

Video page update
Posted on June 22, 2004 at 10:09 by Jon

I took 10 mins to clean up and update the video page this afternoon - take a look to make sure you have seen everything there is to see...

Evil reading...
Posted on June 22, 2004 at 09:44 by Jon

Not particularly related to the game, but a quick flick through the pages at Amazon comes up with an interesting selection of books for budding evil genius'...

Check out Build Your Own Laser, Phaser, Ion Ray Gun and Other Working Space-age Projects... or perhaps Electronic Gadgets for the Evil Genius: 21 Build-it-yourself Projects for inspiration (UK links only).

VU Games cuts 350 jobs, Sierra shut down
Posted on June 22, 2004 at 08:50 by Jon

VU Games announced recently that they are taking another step towards their company restructuring byt announcing the cut of around 350 (40%) American jobs this week.

The hardest hit will be Sierra, which is effectivly shut down, although other companies such as Blizzard seem unaffected. Evil Genius was to be partly published under the Sierra name, but along with Half Life 2 and other games in a similar position will not be seriously affected as they are being developed by external companies and published by the VUG parent.

Although the news is a little worrying, I have been assured by the Evil Genius team that the game is perfectly safe, with only very minor paperwork, etc, to be sorted out with regards to the changes.

More information can be read here.

Preview goodness
Posted on June 18, 2004 at 04:33 by Jon

A couple of interesting previews, which are always great to sum up the main idea of the game and perhaps introduce a few little extra nibbles of info for even the biggest fan of Evil.

An enthusiastic article has been written by Games Europe, which is a decent read. Games Radar also offers a short, if occasionally factually innacurate preview, but does have a decent selection of screenshots. Enjoy.

New competition: Wallpaper/picture creation
Posted on June 16, 2004 at 10:17 by Jon

The third summer competition here at Evil Planet is a little different from the previous two, and therefore will hopefully appeal to all you artists (or simply anyone with a sense of humour and a copy of paint). More Repoublic CD's are up for grabs, and good entries will be displayed on this site... for more information check out this forum thread.

Mini Interview 1
Posted on June 15, 2004 at 11:40 by Jon

Many thanks to Alex, lead programmer on Evil Genius, for being the first to reply with some answers to my mini-interview that I sent around the Elixir team. It's a enjoyable little read, so go check it out.

Major updates ahead!
Posted on June 14, 2004 at 09:47 by Jon

I've been very aware of the fact that since I started testing Evil Genius, the amount of time I've had available to update the site has been pretty short. Luckily, however, the guys at Elixir are happy for me to spend time updating the site from work, and so almost daily updates should be coming from now on.

Every single section of the website is getting an update. New screenshots are promised and will be online soon. The rooms and items section will be fully updated, with as many details about each room and each item that I'm allowed to post. The characters (and there are literally hundreds) will all be mentioned and discussed.

I've also sent a mini interview to many of the Elixir team members - if they can spend time answering them, which may be hard as we are really busy, then they should make a welcome addition to the site too.

For now, I've given the FAQ a bit of a spring clean. It's still not very long though, so if you guys have any questions which you would like adding to the list (and answering if I can!) then feel free to contact us.

Henchmen bios - Eli
Posted on June 8, 2004 at 10:35 by Jon

IGN, one of the best gaming websites around and parter with Gamespy, have started what seems like a series of articles about the 10 henchmen in Evil Genius. It's great news, because as soon as I know details about them are pubnlic knowledge, I can start updating their details on my site safe in the knowledge that the info is already in the public domain.

There is also a short video clip of Eli as well as several screenshots.

So, check out the bio and extra goodies for Eli over here.

Demo in the works
Posted on June 4, 2004 at 01:48 by Jon

For those of you who haven't noticed, on the recently updated official site, there is a page which mentions a demo.

I spoke with Pete Gilbert, head producer on Evil Genius, who confirmed to me that there will be a demo, and that it is already in the works. It will be out in "the next few months".

Downloadable gameplay movie
Posted on June 3, 2004 at 05:50 by Jon

A interesting 2 minute long video of ingame footage is now available from a variety of sources (originally it was only available on Gamespot to stream only). It's a little jilted, for it is simply a collection of lots of small in-game clips, without even some music in the background, but it's certainly worth the 7.5 meg downloaded.

Check it out at FilePlanet, 3d Gamers or WorthPlaying.

Official site makeover!
Posted on June 1, 2004 at 11:39 by Jon

Doth my eyes decieve me?! Have Vivendi actually updated the official site?!

It seems so - and a rather sexy website it is too, with some great character bios, new screenshots, a huge fansite kit for those of you who want to set up your own fansite, and news. The forums, sadly, are still pretty rubbishy (I'm sure they would be used more if they had a decent forum system) but other than that, it's very impressive. Go check it out at

Developer diary update at TVG
Posted on May 30, 2004 at 03:52 by Jon

Total Video Games last month posted the first of their developer diaries about Elixir Studios, featuring comments from the top guys there, and was generally regarded as a great read by the community here. The second installment is now available, and is also an enjoyable read. Check it out.

Along with the article are a few new screenshots, including a great shot of the Do Not Press trap and the giant "laser". Rock on.

More competition entries...
Posted on May 26, 2004 at 01:44 by Jon

Whilst I have been keeping myself busy over here, I am rather stupidly forgotten to post any more of the competition entries that were submitted for the first Evil Planet competition a week or so back. So, without further ado, please enjoy this excellent entry from Dennis. It didn't win the competition, but was nevertheless awarded a prize for being funny and imaginative...

You can also see the entries from ][ceDragon and Splintercell which, whilst excellent, didn't win a prize. Enjoy!

Don't forget that the current competition is running until the end of this month, and is unbelievably easy to enter. All we wan you to do is, in 50 words or less, explain why Evil Genius will rock... all the details and place to submit your answer are here.

Evil Genius testing diaries
Posted on May 23, 2004 at 11:31 by Jon

The first of hopefully many diaries of my time spent testing Evil Genius has been posted. For simplicities sake, I am doing it on the forums, and you can catch up with all the info (or at least everything I am at liberty to say) over here. Later, you can use the handy link in the "Exclusives" section of the left hand side menu.

Working at Elixir
Posted on May 22, 2004 at 10:08 by Jon

For those who don't know, the webmaster of this site (i.e. me!) recently got the opportunity to spend just over two months at Elixir Studios and test Evil Genius. I know for some that testing computer games and getting paid sounds like a dream job - and I guess it is, but it's gonna be tight making ends meet in London! Anyway - I start work on Monday and I'll be keeping you guys informed about what I am doing with online diaries on the forums - first one going up soon. Information here.

E3 Update #6
Posted on May 19, 2004 at 05:14 by Jon

On top of the many links I have posted in the last week (scroll down for these) which include screenshots, videos and previews from the big gaming sites, I also have a list of previews from smaller sites.

Gamers Temple have an enjoyable two page preview. HomeLAN Fed have a rather basic update, whilst UGO have a decent contribution of some length. The Inquirer has a short, but interesting reoprt linking Evil Genius to a similar game called "Destroy all Humans". And finally, those of you who understand Spanish may wish to check out the offering from UOL Jogos.

Thanks, Elixir, for the notification.

New preview
Posted on May 19, 2004 at 02:12 by Jon

My hosts Gamespy recently sat down with Demis to take a look at the most recent post E3 build of the game. The preview is pretty short but full of interesting pieces of information. Here's a paragraph to get you hooked...
Our demo with Hassabis gave us a chance to see a few of the other henchmen who fight on your side. First up was Dr. Cranium -- a female cosmetics scientist gone bad. Like most of the graphics in Evil Genius, her look is bright and cartoony, wearing a white lab coat and having huge purple hair in the style of the Bride of Frankenstein, complete with requisite white streak running through it. Fittingly, Cranium takes care of business with a purple perfume powder, bringing enemies choking to their knees. We also got a look at Dr. Mezmero, a rotund magician with the ability to drain the will of his enemies. For example, it's possible to use Mezmero to make investigators forget why they came to the island in the first place, after which they simply wander back to the casino, never to be heard from again.
It also confirms that the release date remains September 2004. Read it all here.

Compeition stuff
Posted on May 18, 2004 at 16:24 by Jon

The winning entry of last week's Evil Planet competition has been placed on the site for your viewing pleasure - check out Baz's diary of an evil genius. More entries to appear soon!

You'll be pleased to know that a new competition has already been set up, and you can enter it very easily. All we want you to do is, in 50 words or less, describe why Evil Genius will be the best game ever... so pretty easy really. Another copy of the Republic: The Revolution CD is up for grabs for the winner - so get your thinking cap on and get your entry in at this forum thread. Have fun!

E3 Update #5
Posted on May 16, 2004 at 04:42 by Jon

Thanks, Matt, for informing me about a new preview of Evil Genius over at UGO. It's pretty interesting, with snippets of new info, so go enjoy.

Demis Interview (video)
Posted on May 14, 2004 at 15:55 by Jon

If you missed the video/audio feed of Demis' interview with Gamespy Livewire, subscribers to FilePlanet can download a copy of the interview here (first 15 mins of an hour long video). I expect it will appear for non-subscribers soon - if not, I'll see what I can do about getting it for you.

Did you check out our wiki yet?
Yeah, I even added a thing or two.
Yeah, it's looking good so far!
Yeah, but I don't really see the point.
No, but I surely will!
No, and I don't suppose I will.
Huh? What IS a wiki?
