Elixir testing positions filled
Posted on May 14, 2004 at 15:25 by Jon

Elixir wrote to me this afternoon to mention that all the testing jobs which were being asked for over the last few weeks have been taken. As some of you know, I myself was lucky enough to be allowed the chance to work there - for more information, including details of what this will mean for the site, please read my comments on the situation.

E3 Update #4
Posted on May 14, 2004 at 14:50 by Jon

There are 3 movies at IGN, all of which look pretty fun. Anyone can download them, but subscribers get better quality versions. Enjoy!

E3 Update #3
Posted on May 13, 2004 at 06:40 by Jon

Just a reminder, whilst I drool over the new Half Life 2 video, that Demis Hassabis will be interviewed on Gamespy/IGn Livewire here at 2:06 PDT. Check it out!

Competition winners!
Posted on May 12, 2004 at 09:53 by Jon

Thanks to those who entered the first of many Evil Planet summer competitions - the entries we recieved were sparse but high in quality and humour. Every single entry will be featured in the column section (probably after E3 to ensure it doesn't get lost in the other news). So - congratulations to "Death at the Door" (Baz) for winning the competition by the skin of his teeth, closely followed by an excellent entry from "Dennis". Runners-up include Splintercell and ][cedragon, but unfortunatly we cannot give away 4 prizes!

Because of the close nature of the competition, both Dennis and DatD will both recieve a copy of the Republic: The Revolution soundtrack, courtesy of Elixir.

Congratulations to all, and make sure you look out for the next competition very soon!

E3 Update #2
Posted on May 12, 2004 at 09:25 by Jon

It continues... with a collection of goodies from Gamespot. You can check out their pre-show impressions (textual) here, you can check out their screenshots (similar to IGN's) here and they have an exclusive gameplay video, which basic members (free) can stream here. The move is about 2.5 minutes long, and shows random sections of ingame footage. Again, there is some new stuff here, including footage of the missile silo and a couple of cool torture devices. There are also notable improvements in visual and audio elements of the game. Enjoy...

E3 Update #1
Posted on May 12, 2004 at 03:47 by Jon

Okey dokey - E3 is here and we are ready to roll... and the news is coming in thick and fast.

The first highlight is a video interview with Simon Matthews, producer at Elixir. It's on IGN, but unfortunatly is only for subscribers. If you want to check it out, however, it is here. I have just had a look at the video and it is very interesting - some great new footage there. There is a pretty funky section with henchman Eli with his boombox charming the layyyyyyyydies. There are also two cool new items shown - a brainwashing gadget which literally washes the brain, and a torture chambed which is like a big greenhouse with maneating traps. Lastly, they confirm that the release date has been pushed back to Q4 of this year.

Secondly, also courtesy of IGN, but this time for free is a full page of new screenshots. They look pretty nice and I'll be sure to get them on this site before the day is out... for now, go check them out!

Demis on Gamespy "Livewire"
Posted on May 9, 2004 at 11:48 by Jon

This year, like last, Gamespy will run LiveWire - a live audio / video feed of interviews directly from the show floor. The best news is that Demis Hassabis will be one of the many big names on the list. Make sure you tune in on Thursday afternoon (2:06 p.m. PDT) - details here.

Elixir team in LA
Posted on May 9, 2004 at 05:14 by Jon

It's E3 week (cue cheering and geeky whoops of joy) and of course, Elixir are showing Evil Genius (and possibly Blue Vault - I'll have to check on this one). As far as I know, Demis Hassabis and Pete Gilbert are demonstrating the game (again, I'll confirm this tomorrow) and for all the latest and greatest from the team at the show, Evil Planet will be here to report it all.

Update: Elixir have confirmed that Simon Matthews will be in LA demonstrating the game along with Demis and Pete, but are remaining tight-lipped about Blue Vault.

Contest reminder
Posted on May 8, 2004 at 06:56 by Jon

Want to win a copy of the awesome Republic: The Revolution soundtrack? We have loads up for grabs in several competitions this summer - and you still have time to enter the first. What we want you to do is write a short article or story about a day in the life of YOU - the evil genius. It can be funny or serious, and can include pictures or other media if you wish. All decent entries will be featured on the site - and the winner will receive a copy of the CD. For more information, see this forum thread. Entries must be in by May 10th - good luck and have fun!

Demis - he's a clever little guy!
Posted on May 6, 2004 at 04:54 by Jon

I'm sorry I didn't notice the program on BBC1 last night earlier - I would have been able to mention it here and you could have seen it. Luckily for me, my TV was on inbetween some crazy revision session...

The program was about modern day geniuses, and there was not only a guy I know in my home town called Nathan (who is a mathematical genius), but also one Demis Hassabis. The program covered his life, including cute photos as a 8 year old playing chess, and described how he is one of the few people in the world who not only has incredible talent, but also drive and innovation to go into a field that really excites him - i.e. computer "games". Peter Molyneux, Lionhead maestro, commented on the brilliance of Republic even though the game was not a financial world beater.

All in all, it gave an insight into the incredible talent at Elixir. Once they manage to get that game idea that is not only billiant but commerically successful (and Evil Genius may well fit the bill) then the sparks will no doubt start to fly.

Site update
Posted on May 3, 2004 at 15:06 by Jon

Thanks Dennis (aka Monoxism) for his awesome work in helping update the collections of images of the people and rooms in the game. Check out the characters section for updated and new images, and the room section, which is complete with all new images and info about the different rooms. Thanks Mono!

Wanna win a copy of Elixir's excellant Republic soundtrack? Wanna make yourself known to the community here? Wanna help out on the site? New developer diary
Posted on April 30, 2004 at 09:33 by Jon

Now this one looks interesting. Thanks, SuperNintendoChalmers for this link to a TVG feature, which is shaping up to be one of the best interview/previews around. It's the first of many "diaries" with major people in the team - Demis Hassabis (Chairman & Creative Director), Adrian Bolton (Executive Producer), Peter Gilbert (Producer) and Mike Rosser (Assistant Designer).

The three page preview, which has a cool little graphic at the top which isn't too dissimilar to the funky style of the game and this website, includes loads of useful information and 10 new images, two of which are group photos of the team, and one which looks pretty damn cool. The photos will also be on this site shortly, if possible. Check it out!

It's contest time!
Posted on April 28, 2004 at 14:10 by Jon

It's about time we had a competition here at Evil Planet, so courtesy of Elixir we have several copies of the wonderful Republic: the Revolution soundtrack to give away. We will be having a selection of competitions, so if this one doesn't look like your thing, then hang about for the next. Check out all the details on this forum thread and have a go! It is open to anyone - not only forum members (although we encourage you to sign up of course!). The best entries will be featured on this site. Good luck!

Thanks to forum member Lord Baron for organising a thread on the Evil Planet forums which is in the process of collecting up loads of useful bits of information about lots of different parts of the game. Go check it out and feel free to chip in and help out!

Q and A uploaded
Posted on April 19, 2004 at 01:39 by Jon

If you read the news here a week or so back, you may have noticed that a pdf of a recent 35 question marathon interview with Mike Rosser, Assistant Designer was available for download. The Q and A has now been formatted into a proper feature of the site, and can be viewed here. Enjoy!

Preview roundup
Posted on April 16, 2004 at 12:54 by Jon

A couple of Evil Genius previews - one double page spread in this months UK PC Gamer, and another right here at Yahoo Games. Both are interesting, but offer little in the way of anything new to EG veterans...

Testing info
Posted on April 16, 2004 at 11:00 by Jon

Further to my post yesterday regarding the issue of testing Evil Genius, I have the following updates sent to me by Elixir for those who are interested. The following is a snippet:
We will probably be looking for 4 testers to work on a full-time basis in the office (hence the need for them to be in London area) - we won't be able to use any remote testers at this point.

We will be paying people (I need to confirm the figure though) - mainly because we are looking for people who will work hard and approach this in a professional manner! For the same reason we will probably also be looking for 18 year olds upwards, although this isn't set in stone and we may make an exception for someone who looks really good. Testers will be working on a freelance basis rather than as a full employee so they will be responsible for organising their own tax and NI (I can help people organise this).

We will [also] be asking people to sign an NDA.

Testers needed for Evil Genius!
Posted on April 15, 2004 at 13:10 by Jon

Yup - exciting news for Evil Genius wannabees and game freaks! Serious game testers are now needed to do part time testing during May, June and July. I need not tell you what a great chance this is to get into the games market with some great experience. Elixir say:

We need a number of freelance focus testers to work on Evil Genius starting at weekly intervals from the week beginning 3rd May and working up until 30th July. Please note that we will expect you to work very hard so only apply if you are serious!

Applicants must be based in the London area and be enthusiastic about games. Attention to detail and a good sense of humour are essential. Previous testing experience would be an advantage.

Please send a copy of your CV to recruit@elixir-studios.co.uk. No agencies please.

Good luck!

Republic news: Soundtrack review
Posted on April 15, 2004 at 10:05 by Jon

One of the best parts about Republic, as most people will say, is the haunting and beautiful soundtrack. The CD has been on sale for some time now by contacting Elixir and a well known music site has recently given it 8.5/10, an excellant result. The website doesn't seem to allow copying and pasting of text, so no quote - but you can view the excellant and interesting review of the CD here at Music4Games.

You may also be interested to note I will very soon be running a competition to win a copy of the soundtrack - more details sooon!

Official Elixir site updated
Posted on April 13, 2004 at 14:41 by Jon

Elixir, who are renound for not updating their main page too often have been busy with a fairly decent update about the recent GDC (including links, none of which are new) and the first "official" word on Blue Vault (I was wondering when that would come...). Check it out if you are interested.

Exclusive Q and A answers!
Posted on April 9, 2004 at 03:46 by Jon

I have to big it up massively to the guys at Elixir (especially Mike Rosser, Assistant Designer "supreme") for answering the questions that the community have been putting to the team on the forums. At least 35 questions have been carefully answered - and some interesting information is included. So - if you asked a question and want to see the answer, or if you just wanna know a little more about the game, then go ahead and download this 50kb .pdf version of the Q and A (direct link).

The Q and A will also appear on this site as a feature in a day or two.

Evil Genius Media
Posted on April 8, 2004 at 05:58 by Jon

Thanks to forum member Manical Matt for pointing me in the direction of yet another Gamespot exclusive (they seem to do pretty well from Elixir!). This time it is a 2 page developer diary which is an interesting read, and 6 new screenshots, which I'll upload to this site in due time. Enjoy!

Blue Vault Screenshots
Posted on April 7, 2004 at 09:18 by Jon

OK, I can't call them exclusive, 'cos another site got them before me... but as far as I know, this is the only place that you can see free screenshots of Elixir's recently announced third game, Blue Vault. Check out my Blue Vault info page for the screenshots and more information.

Blue Vault full preview
Posted on April 6, 2004 at 11:10 by Jon

For those who wish to see it, there is a full preview (including screenshots I think) of Blue Vault at PC Zone. Catch is it's subscriber only, but you can subscribe for a week for a £1 text - details on the site. You could, of course, wait for free screenshots to appear online... watch this space!

Blue Vault info
Posted on April 3, 2004 at 09:35 by Jon

OK - I know some people are cautiously interested in Elixir's third game, so I have put together a short preview for you from the information in this month's PC Zone magazine. Before you read it, let me make it clear that I have got no screenshots and only about 1/10th of the information in the actual magazine so go buy it!. However, for those who cannot... check this out.

Evil Genius preview

UK residents can see a decent 2-page preview of Evil Genius with some pretty good screenshots in this month's issue of PC Zone, out a day or two ago. Page 52.

Evil Genius interview
Posted on April 2, 2004 at 11:42 by Jon

Wooo... the news just keeps on rolling in today!

This offering from Armchair Empire is pretty good. Pete Gilbert, the producer of the game, chats about the work they have done, and about the testing they have done within different groups in the UK and abroad. Check it out.

Revealed: NEXT Elixir Game
Posted on April 2, 2004 at 02:47 by Jon

Yup... you read right.

Nope... this ain't no belated April 1st prank

Elixir have, in an exclusive preview with PC Zone (UK mag) given the details of their next game. And technically impressive it sounds too.

The title? Blue Vault. And you want some info on it? Well, UK residents can run down to their corner shop to read about it. Here's the summery from the PC Zone website:

Republic the Revolution might have been one heckuva technically impressive game, but it seems north London-based developer Elixir has something altogether more epic up its sleeve for the highly promising Blue Vault.

We've now bagged the first ever details on Elixir's follow-up of sorts to Republic, with a world exclusive in-depth preview available in the latest issue of our sister publication PC Zone, out today.

With the best will in the world it was always going to be a tall order getting people excited about a game about political skulduggery for Republic; for Blue Vault the team is playing it safe with a story packed with aliens, conspiracy theories and a, erm, pristine, dazzlingly beautiful view of the future. Eh?

The Blue Vault of the title refers to an organisation which spends its time hunting down pesky aliens and doing its best not to let other humans even know the extraterrestrial sons-of-bitches even exist. There are plans for six different alien species, with around thirty missions in the finished game.

It's a strategy title, so expect such delightful elements as resource gathering, unit recruitment and skill advancement to make a decent fist of things, though we're promised a detail level on a par with RPGs.

Blue Vault isn't set for release until late next year, but with Elixir's usual determination to create a noticeably different game, this is one well worth keeping a close eye on.

For a full in-depth preview, featuring an exclusive interview with Elixir CEO Mark Hewitt and producer James Sutherland, plus the world's first screeshots, check out issue 141 of PC Zone, out today.

Edit: Please note that one part of the above quote is INCORRECT. Elixir have personally told me that the game is NOT a sequal to Republic - it is a completely seperate game. So if you were not a fan of Republic, this may be for you still...

Site stuff
Posted on April 1, 2004 at 14:54 by Jon

Well, it's been a busy week with the GDC finishing a few days ago, and the new screenshots, previews and video interviews (all highlighted below) have been good to see.

Now that I have a few days after handing in a major piece of Uni coursework, I wil be updating this site a little more - the FAQ tomorrow being an example. For now, I have added the new artwork that has been doing the rounds recently - you can see them here.

Lastly - stay tuned to this space... some interesting news will hopefully be arriving soon...

IGN preview
Posted on March 30, 2004 at 10:34 by Jon

Not happy with mere screenshots and a video, IGN have posted a two page preview of the game following what they saw at the recent Games Developer's Conference. A lot of the information is already known, but the following quote seems to be new:
Every henchman has two special abilities, such as wind walk (teleport), grenade and rocket launcher attacks (heavy area damage), eviscerate (one slash kill with a sword) and mine field (can place explosives on the ground that unsuspecting agents will walk over and go boom).

GameSpot video interview
Posted on March 28, 2004 at 13:50 by Jon

Gamespot have had a chance to sit down with Demis Hassabis, lead guy at Elixir, and rather in teresting it is too. It is supposed to be a "Gamespot Complete" feature, but as a basic member I have been able to to stream it, and you can too here. You can also stream a one-minute video of Ivan the henchman dispatching some intruders.

For those who can't be bothered to view the videos, here are the main points:

  • The game will be out late September (hopefully!)
  • The game will feature trap bonuses for really inventive trap combinations
  • You start on a small island and work your way up to a volcanic lair
  • You can disguise your evil activities under the guise of a tourist island - complete with hotels, casinos and so forth

Who wants a fry-up?!
Posted on March 27, 2004 at 10:59 by Jon

Oh yeah!

New screens and video interview
Posted on March 27, 2004 at 10:02 by Jon

IGN have done pretty well with their Evil Genius info - a load of new screenshots and a video interview to boot. It's for subscribers only, unfortunatly, but I'm going to try and see if I can get it to tell you all about it...

New preview and videos
Posted on March 26, 2004 at 13:45 by Jon

Thanks, OpFlash, for notifying me about a new preview over at GameSpot. It's pretty interesting, although it mentions that the game may not come out till the fourth quater of this year, which is a little disappointing.

Expect some more previews following Demis' appearence at the GDC this week.

Edit: Oops, just noticed! There are two new videos, which any GameSpot member can stream - check out the links at the bottom of the same page.

Edge preview
Posted on March 22, 2004 at 16:27 by Jon

Edge, according to sources (thanks Matt) have recently previewed Evil Genius. The preview finishes with the following words:
"The real joy, though, is in the details. When characters interact they do so with wit and exuberance, and it's this and not the neat and tidy mathematical mechanics that will lift the game above many others in the eyes of PC gamers.

Evil genius is a simple idea, sweetly executed, but in a heavily saturated strategy industry that may not be enough. The next months will see the really crucial powerplays take place - Vivendi's marketing battle for the blackened hearts and scheming minds of the management market."

Message from Evil Genius exec producer
Posted on March 10, 2004 at 09:20 by Jon

Pete Gilbert, the lead producer of the game, has sent me the following email giving the low-down on the latest info. There isn't any game information, but it's good to see the team are keeping in contact with fan sites. Thanks!
Dear All,

Many apologies for the lack of information from the Evil Genius shop floor. Lots going on at the moment. The team are working very hard to pull all of the game objectives together for a build which is planned for a weeks time. It's definitely nose to the grindstone time! Once we are through this milestone I will definitely, honestly, hand on heart...dip me in the biotanks if I don't... give you loads of juicy gossip and put your questions to the team.

Right.. back to work... now where did I put that Pro Plus?

Pete

Apologies
Posted on March 9, 2004 at 09:33 by Jon

I'm loosing count of the amount of times I have done posts like this in the past, but here's another one. Sorry that the site hasn't been updated in a while. Primarily this is, as always, due to the fact that there is absolutely no information leaking from Elixir. Secondly, however, I am a final year Uni student and things are just a teeny tiny little bit busy at the moment.

Sucks, but that's life :)

Evil Genius previews
Posted on March 1, 2004 at 04:50 by Jon

Thanks Robbo, for pointing me in the direction of this pretty decent Evil Genius preview by my hosts Gamespy. Here's a quick quote:
Rather than force you to micromanage everything, Elixir is trying to make sure characters can function on their own once you set it to their tasks. In one scene, a saboteur had infiltrated our base and blown up a power generator, at which point a valet came running in with a fire extinguisher to put out the fire, an engineer arrived to put things back in order, and the entire base went on alert to find the culprit. It's always possible to click on a particular character and set them to some other task (for instance, you can give orders as specific as either capturing or killing an infiltrator), but if you set things up correctly, your staff should do a lot of the work for you. This should become especially important as you get closer to completing your doomsday device; by the time you're ready to conquer the world, your base will probably be under attack from every governing body under the sun, setting the stage for what could be one of the most insane game climaxes ever.
Edit: Wow - are my eyes decieving me? Two previews in ONE day?! Yup, Computer and Video Games also have a preview and interview with Demis Hassabis. Check it out! (Thanks to Elixir for link).

Latest from Elixir
Posted on February 24, 2004 at 11:09 by Jon

Had word from the team at Elixir this afternoon, bringing me up to date with everything that's going on in the world of Evil Genius development. Apparantly everything is going really steadily and well. They are really busy with the game, and seem to be enjoying making it.

Demis (founder of Elixir) is heading off to the Games Developers Conference in March. He be giving a talk and also participating in a discussion panel. More details soon.

Although I have not yet approached Elixir, I'm hoping to have some time with them to ask your questions about the game. If you would like to contribute to the questions list, there is a forum thread set up so you can send them to me.

Lastly, there are some exciting things in the works here at Evil Planet, so keep on checking out this news section for more over the next few weeks.

New column
Posted on February 16, 2004 at 12:02 by Jon

Hopefully the first of many different columns from many different people, Mobster989 has sent in an article about which evil weaponary an Evil Genius may use to reek havok. Thanks Mobster, and go check it out... (Note this does not constitute a list of any actual weapons in the game...)

Tum te tum... nothing to post...
Posted on February 10, 2004 at 16:42 by Jon

Yup - what a suprise - but there is very little going down in the evil mists around Elixir Studios at the moment, unless of course you put in your order for the Republic soundtrack CD (see below).

Anyway, that hasn't stopped the forums from exploding into life - go check them out and post away.

Also, I rarely do external links for the hell of it, but take a look at the very evil http://www.villainsupply.com - they have a pretty cool website styled very much like the game ideas. Kinda fun.

Republic soundtrack CD's available soon
Posted on February 4, 2004 at 09:26 by Jon

I know this is not Evil Genius news, but it will interest many people here I'm sure.

If there was one thing that all critics picked up as brilliant about Republic, it was the soundtrack. After multiple requests, Elixir are now taking orders for soundtrack CD's. They will cost £10 each, and you can get information and/or place your order by emailing Elixir directly at poppy@elixir-studios.co.uk. The CD will be out on February 20th.

Ask a Question!
Posted on February 2, 2004 at 03:21 by Jon

News is, and will be, a little slow over the next few months. The game is quite a way off, so it's hardly suprising!

Anyway, while we are waiting for new screenshots and other information to leak from Elixir, check out the forums - there is a lot of good chat going on there, and a great little community building up.

Feel free to ask questions about the game... I have played it myself, and although I can't and will not answer some types of questions, I will endeavour to do so if I feel the information you are asking for is already in the public domain.

Game FAQ
Posted on January 30, 2004 at 10:06 by Jon

Version 1.0. of the FAQ is now here on this site - told you it was coming soon. It will be filled up and edited more at regular dates as and when information becomes available.

Check it out here.

I know that my forums here at Evil Planet are here and bubbling away nicely, but I thought I'd quickly point out the forums at the official site.

They are a little quiet at the moment, but have lots of people who are interested to talk if the conversation is there. Check it out.

Exclusive: Interview with Demis Hassabis
Posted on January 28, 2004 at 14:29 by Jon

Demis Hassabis, the executive designer of Evil Genius and founder of Elixir-Studios took some time out to answer a few of my questions.

The interview, hopefully one of many with the team, can be read here.

Welcome to the site!
Posted on January 28, 2004 at 14:10 by Jon

Welcome to the very new, and very first Evil Genius fansite!

This site, at the very cool web address www.evilplanet.com and hosted by the also cool Gamespy Industries, will hopefully fill your every need when it comes to finding information on the game.

A lot of information is already in - other bits of information are going in over the weekend and in the next week as exclusive information and details comes from Elixir. Some pages cannot be updated, due to their nature, until the game comes out.

Note that the forums for this site have already been in use for a week or so and are buzzing - go check them out using the big moving button at the top

Enjoy, and hope you come regularly!

Did you check out our wiki yet?
Yeah, I even added a thing or two.
Yeah, it's looking good so far!
Yeah, but I don't really see the point.
No, but I surely will!
No, and I don't suppose I will.
Huh? What IS a wiki?
